Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on July 27.

The Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce announced it has endorsed Mayor Jenny Durkan’s Families, Education, Preschool, and Promise (FEPP) Levy, which will appear on the November 2018 ballot. The seven-year levy would replace two expiring levies: the 2014 Seattle Preschool Program Levy (SPP), which subsidizes high-quality preschool, and the 2011 Families & Education Levy, which funds K-12 support programs. In addition, this levy will also fund the Seattle Promise program, which will expand access to community college for Seattle public high school graduates.

“Education is tied to so many aspects of an inclusive economy,” said Chamber president and CEO Marilyn Strickland. “This levy supports kids, particularly those from underrepresented communities, at multiple stages of their education, and we are proud to endorse it. We know that this levy comes at a time when there are concerns around accountability in city government spending, and we look forward to working with Mayor Durkan on oversight measures to ensure desired outcomes are produced.”

The Chamber’s endorsement of FEPP is the latest example of the organization’s deep-rooted support for policy efforts to improve education outcomes in the Seattle metropolitan region, including past support for the two expiring levies as well as the King County Best Starts for Kids levy.
